About the Phantom of the Opera

This slot is based on the 2004 movie, but the story is considerably older and comes from the novel ”Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” written in French by Gaston Leroux and published as a serial in 1909-1910. In the 1980s, Andrew Lloyd Webber turned the storyline into a musical using a libretto he co-wrote with Richard Stilgoe and with lyrics by Charles Hart.

The plot revolves around Christine, a young soprano who becomes the obsession of Erik, a masked musical genius who lives under the opera house in Paris. The subterranean part of the opera house in Paris actually exists in real life, even the underground lake. Nowadays, the lake is used to train French firefighters to carry out rescue missions while swimming in the dark.
